Mosaic Art History

The history of mosaic goes back some 4,000 years or more, with the use of terracotta cones pushed point-first into a background to give decoration. By the eighth century BC, there were pebble pavements, using different coloured stones to create patterns, although these tended to be unstructured decoration. It was the Greeks, in the four centuries BC, who raised the pebble technique to an art form, with precise geometric patterns and detailed scenes of people and animals. By 200 BC, specially manufactured pieces ("tesserae") were being used to give extra detail and range of colour to the work. Using small tesserae, sometimes only a few millimetres in size, meant that mosaics could imitate paintings...

People often think that mosaics are made by pressing the pieces (tesserae) into a background medium, such as cement. This is one possible way, but the most widely used techniques are the direct method and the indirect method. With the direct method, the tesserae are stuck firmly into place to a backing surface. When the adhesive has dried, grout is applied to the mosaic to fill in the gaps. The indirect (reverse) method involves sticking tesserae face down on to a temporary surface (such as a sheet of brown paper) with a water-soluble glue (e.g. wallpaper paste). When set, the entire mosaic can be taken to its final site and pressed into a bed of adhesive or cement. When it is set in place, the...

When deciding what materials to use in your mosaic, there are a number of practical things to take into account: Are the materials suitable for where the mosaic will be placed or used? For example, if the mosaic will go out of doors, will the materials survive frost and rain? If the mosaic will go under foot, will the materials stand up to wear and tear? Will the materials will give you a flat surface, if this is needed? How much of the materials will you need and how much will they cost? Notes on various materials: Crockery: Often cheap (or free) to get. Can be quirky, fun and evocative ("memoryware"). Can be difficult to get flat surfaces, or a lot the same. May be damaged by frost. The material...

How do you keep the final level of a piece flat when using different types of china, etc.? I attempted a small serving tray, but I can't carry anything on it - everything wobbles. Mostly, you can't keep it level, I'm afraid. For my coffee table I put in some plate bases for standing things on. Generally if you use a lot of small pieces of roughly the same thickness, and The indirect method involves sticking the pieces face down on a surface (e.g. paper, a flat sheet or a mould) using a water-soluble glue. When the glue has dried you fill in from the back with grout or cement. When that's set you soak off the glue on the front. Then you grout from the front (as with the direct method). This method is...

Pique assiette mosaic

Just what is pique assiette mosaic? The short answer is that pique assiette is a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics - plates, dishes, cups, tiles - and other found objects into the design. The longer answer, to think about the appeal and expressiveness of pique assiette, must take in ideas of lateral thinking, humour, the art of recycling, and the significance of found objects. The basic idea is an old one. Roman mosaicists used pieces of terracotta vessels to obtain red colours in their work and also glass from broken bottles. In Britain, fragments of the red-glazed Samian ware (imported from Gaul) were used. Any busy mosaic workshop would surely have scavenged and...

The use of found objects is a central theme in pique assiette. Found objects lend a particular richness to the work and bring with them meaning and symbolism. On the one hand there is the mystique, the unknown, stemming from that part of their history that has to be guessed at. On the other hand there is the particular story of the chance events that allowed them to be found. The circumstances, the place, the time, all become embedded in the object. This type of mosaic, particularly where the items are personal ones, is sometimes referred to as "shardware" or "memoryware". Just as hints of smells can trigger vivid memories, fragments of the objects or patterns we have around us at different times in...

Mosaic pictures can be made from many different types of material. From the traditional smalti to coloured card cut into shapes. The different properties offered by these materials means that finished mosaics can be placed almost anywhere in the world, indoors or out. Below we list the most common materials used for making mosaics. Tesserae is the collective name for the small tiles that when placed close together go to make up the mosaic picture. Smalti Smalti is the classic mosaic material. They are thick, rectangular pieces of opaque glass approximately 10x15x7mm. The glass is coloured with metallic oxides while molten. They are then allowed to cool into 'pancakes' approximately 31cm in diameter...

Safety notice Be sure to always read the label to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for use and to ensure that your materials are compatible. Also, be sure to work in a well-ventilated room, as many adhesives give off toxic fumes. Considerations There are several types of adhesives available, so before you start, there are a few things to consider: Is either of the materials to be adhered transparent? Mosaics, mosaics, mosaics. It seems as if everywhere we look we see mosaics. It is an art form that has resurfaced as a popular craft form. Mosaics can be made from any of a number of materials, from the traditional tessera and glass, to mundane materials such as stones and beads, to the unexpected bottle caps, nuts and bolts, and industrial castoffs. A hundred years ago--or so it seems--my college art teacher gave me the address of a stained-glass shop owned by two generous brothers. Their stained-glass scraps and many visits sustained me through 36 years of teaching. I recently donated two large boxes and four large, full shopping bags of the glass remains to the Museum of Contemporary Art School here in Chicago. They will do more mosaics and continue a tradition that dates back to the 12th century and the Byzantine Eastern Roman Empire. We come by some materials in circuitous ways. The art department received a gift of approximately 30 tiltable drawing tables. Not really having room for them, our teachers gave many to students interested in...

The biggest influence on the human state of mind with the possible exception of the weather is colour. We are surrounded by references: "a red rag to a bull", "blue with cold", "green with envy", "in the pink". The psychology of colour and how colour affects human behaviour is now a serious course of study at universities. Hospital rooms, classrooms, fast food restaurants and offices are painted in colours to influence the behaviour and mood of the people who use these spaces. Even the products on the shelves of your local supermarket have been packaged in colours carefully chosen to attract your attention and encourage you to buy. So why are people so hesitant to use colour in their home...

Everybody is familiar with the dramatic change that can come about from simply changing the colour on your walls. But how many people have actually considered changing the shape of the space itself? Sometimes we’re presented with problematic spaces that demand solutions. A very narrow room with a high ceiling looks out of proportion - maybe installing a false ceiling with recessed downlighters is the answer. A bathroom next to a WC practically instructs you to remove the dividing wall. Try applying this principle to an ordinary space as well, one which doesn’t have particular problems of size or proportion, but which might benefit from a re-think of the space and how it is to be used...

Unless you’ve been lucky enough to build your house from the ground up, you will at some point be stuck with somebody else’s ideas of interior decoration. You may decide to live with the royal blue living room and daisy wallpaper in the kitchen, or you might feel a sudden urgent desire to paint the house magnolia. Neither solution is ideal, as in neither case are you permitting your own style preferences and creativity to find expression. But just how do you pinpoint your style? One way is to turn yourself into a sponge. Absorb everything you come into contact with even if it doesn’t seem relevant at the time. I was once asked to design a bright, colourful and "fun" kitchen for...

The Arts and Crafts era began in England during the late 1800's. Simple clean designs and individual craftsmanship that employed aspects of nature were the main characteristics of this design period. This new movement was in direct contrast to the mass production of products that was made possible by the industrial revolution. This new art, (Art Nouveau in French) was also many ways a relief from the lavishly ornate designs of the Victorian era which preceded. The industrial revolution had dehumanized the process of manufacturing especially as it relates to home decor products. It broke down the work process into various components by processes called the "division of labor". Workers were able to...
